Getting from Kenneth Kaunda Airport (KKIA) to Lusaka

How to get from Kenneth Kaunda International Airport to your hotel in Lusaka: journey times, transfers and taxis, and tips for late arrivals.

View over Lusaka, Zambia

Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA) is Lusaka's international airport, north-east of the city centre. Here's how to get from arrivals to your hotel.

How long does it take?

In normal traffic, the drive from KKIA to most central Lusaka hotels takes about 30 to 40 minutes. Allow longer at rush hour, especially in the late afternoon.

Your options

Pre-booked private transfer

The simplest option, especially on your first visit. Your driver tracks your flight, meets you at arrivals with a name board and takes you straight to your hotel for a price agreed in advance. See our Lusaka airport pickup service or book a KKIA transfer.

Airport taxis

Taxis wait outside arrivals. Agree the fare before you get in, as prices aren't always metered, and make sure the car is a registered taxi.

Hotel shuttles

Some larger hotels run their own airport shuttles. Ask your hotel when you book, as you may need to request it in advance.

Ride-hailing apps

Ride-hailing apps operate in Lusaka, but availability at the airport can vary, especially late at night. Have a backup plan in case no driver accepts.

Arriving late at night

Many international flights land late in the evening or early in the morning. If you arrive at night, pre-book your ride so you're not negotiating in the car park. Our 24/7 airport taxi covers every arrival, whatever the time.

Before you leave the airport

  • Get some Zambian kwacha from an ATM or exchange desk for tips and small purchases.
  • Consider buying a local SIM card for data. You'll need your passport to register it.
  • Keep your hotel's address and phone number handy for your driver.

Travelling as a group or with lots of luggage

For families, groups and safari luggage, book a larger vehicle in advance. See our airport transfers in Zambia page for minibuses and 4x4s.
