Best Time to Visit Victoria Falls
When to see Victoria Falls at full power, when the views are clearest, and when Devil's Pool is open: what each season looks like.
Victoria Falls changes more through the year than almost anywhere else in Zambia. The Zambezi River rises after the rains and drops through the dry season, so the best time to visit depends on what you want to see and do.
Victoria Falls season by season
February to May: peak flow
This is when the Falls are at their most powerful, usually peaking around April. The roar is huge and the spray rises high above the gorge, so expect to get soaked on the walking paths. The downside is that the spray can hide much of the view, especially from the Zambian side.
June to August: the best all-round time
The water is still flowing strongly, but there's less spray, so you can see more of the Falls. This is the cool, dry season, with warm, sunny days and chilly mornings and evenings. Many visitors find it the most comfortable time to go.
September to December: low water
The river is at its lowest, and parts of the Zambian side can be almost dry, showing the rock face underneath. It gets hot, especially in October. Low water is also when Devil's Pool swims and Livingstone Island visits are possible.
Late November to January: the rains return
The rainy season starts, the landscape turns green, and the river slowly starts to rise again. Afternoon storms are common, so plan outdoor activities for the morning.
Which side is better: Zambia or Zimbabwe?
The Zimbabwe side has more viewpoints facing the main falls. The Zambian side lets you get very close to the water, including the Knife-Edge Bridge and views into the gorge. In the low-water months the Zimbabwe side usually shows more falling water. You can visit both in one trip, but check the visa rules for your nationality before you cross.
Activities and when they run
- Sunset cruise on the Zambezi: runs all year and is a highlight in any season.
- Devil's Pool: only possible when the water is low, usually from around August until the river rises again.
- White-water rafting: best when the water is lower. Some sections may close when the river is at its highest.
- Scenic flights: run all year and are especially dramatic at peak flow, when the spray is visible from far away.
What to pack
- A rain jacket or poncho, especially from February to July.
- A waterproof bag or pouch for your phone and camera.
- Shoes with good grip, as paths near the Falls get wet and slippery.
- Sunscreen, a hat and water for the hot months.
