How to Get from Lusaka to Victoria Falls
Flying, taking the bus, driving or joining a tour: how to get from Lusaka to Victoria Falls, how long each takes, and which suits your trip.
Victoria Falls is just outside Livingstone in southern Zambia, roughly 480 km from Lusaka. That's too far for a comfortable day trip, so plan to spend at least one night in Livingstone, and ideally two.
Your options at a glance
- Fly: the fastest way, at about an hour in the air.
- Intercity bus: the cheapest way, but it takes most of a day.
- Drive or hire a driver: about 6 to 7 hours on the road, with the freedom to stop along the way.
- Join a guided trip: transport, accommodation and activities arranged for you.
Flying from Lusaka to Livingstone
Flights leave Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka and land at Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula International Airport in Livingstone, a short drive from the Falls. It's the best choice if you only have a couple of days. Seats are limited, so book early during busy periods.
Taking the bus
Several coach companies run daily services from Lusaka to Livingstone, mostly leaving in the morning. It's the cheapest option, but expect a long day. Buy your ticket the day before if you can, and keep valuables with you.
Driving or hiring a driver
The route follows the main road south through Mazabuka and Choma. Road conditions vary, so leave early and avoid driving after dark, when livestock, pedestrians and unlit vehicles are hard to see. Many visitors hire a car with a local driver so they can relax on the way.
When to visit
The Falls look very different through the year. Water levels are usually highest from around March to May, when the spray is huge and you will get wet. They are lowest from around October to November, when you can see more of the rock face. Devil's Pool, on the edge of the Falls, only opens when the water is low.
How many days do you need?
- 2 days: the Falls themselves and a sunset cruise on the Zambezi.
- 3 days: add the national park, a view from the Zimbabwe side, or an adventure activity.
Practical tips
- Bring a rain jacket and a waterproof bag for your phone, especially when the water is high.
- Carry some kwacha for small purchases, entry fees and tips.
- Check visa rules before you go if you plan to cross to the Zimbabwe side.
